Meet Brianna, a Bachelor of Primary Education student who aspires to be a Deaf Educator one day. 🏫🗣️
Her journey to university was a unique one, as she left school in year 11 to start TAFE and pursue a Certificate III in Early Childhood, then decided to have a gap year and worked domestically as a flight attendant before transitioning to an administrative role in a training organisation. It was during this time that Brianna discovered her passion for education, and realised how much she loved the concept of learning and decided to return to her studies, this time focusing on primary education online.
Starting her university journey amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, Brianna had to adapt to online learning, which initially felt daunting but quickly became appreciated for its interactivity and flexibility. She has found particular joy in units like Creative Literacies, where she was inspired by passionate educators and explored innovative teaching methods.
Alongside her primary education studies, Brianna has been learning Auslan (Australian Sign Language), completing a Certificate II and currently working on Certificate III. During lockdown, she discovered an Auslan course within her allowed travel radius (Victorian lock-down rules) and decided to give it a go, something she had always been interested in. Since then, what started as a simple curiosity about Auslan has transformed into a deep-seated desire to become a Deaf Educator. After learning Auslan, Brianna is now motivated by the idea of empowering students with the choice between Auslan and hearing devices, ensuring their preferences are respected. ✨

One of her highlights of studying in Muserk is the opportunity to maintain a farm experience while pursuing a full-time load. Living on her family farm alongside her loved ones and pets is a cherished aspect of her life.

Students from a variety of clubs went head-to-head to create the best 30-60-second promotional video using Adobe tools to engage students to join their club!

#1 Enjoy the serenity of the morning as you walk to one of the many delicious breakfast spots listed in this video. ☕️
#2 Next, head off to Karlkurla Bushland Park, Hannans for a beautiful nature walk surrounded by native trees and wildlife.
#3 Head home to refresh and make yourself a delicious lunch.
#4 In the afternoon visit the memorial library to borrow yourself a new book, then walk to the Goldfields Art Centre to view the art gallery and then hang out in their many chill-out zones to read your new book! 📚
#5 Later meet up with friends and either have a BBQ at your student accommodation or visit one of the many great dinner options down Hannan Street.
Let’s take a look at what’s been on so far of Semester 1 at Curtin Kalgoorlie 🌿
1. Barefoot Lunch: As part of extended orientation, the barefoot lunch welcomed over 100 students with live music, plenty of ice cream, and sunny weather – showcasing a perfect day in Kal! ✨
2. Careers Fair: A fantastic opportunity for students to engage with local industry representatives and potential employers to learn about graduate programs, vacation work, and job vacancies.
3. Assessment Centres: During WIL week (WASM’s work-integrated learning), mining companies visited campus to foster relationships with students. Providing a glimpse into the real-world application of theoretical knowledge through enjoyable games and activities! 📘
Fun fact: Connecting with industry is super important in Kal. That’s one of the reasons why Curtin is the second-ranked university in the world and also number one in Australia for mineral and mining engineering for the seventh consecutive year!

Meet @drdarp, a local Curtin champion who recently participated in the @curtinsports Volleyball Housing Cup. 🏐💪
Darp has always had a passion for beach volleyball, “I joined because it was a great way to challenge myself where the stakes were high and seemed like a great opportunity to showcase some team spirit!”
The Housing Cup is a semester-long beach volleyball competition among residential students and isn’t just about the sport. It’s a vibrant community event that brings students together in a fun outdoor setting. Darp enjoyed the friendships and opportunities the competition formed, “It’s a team sport requiring you to utilise your strength and work closely as a team. We have been playing and practising together every Sunday for a while, so it was great to put those skills to the test”.
He strongly encourages everyone to consider joining, “It’s a fantastic way to meet new people from different colleges and get active outdoors.” 🌳

Meet Nigel Angelo, a master’s student in mining engineering at Curtin University Kalgoorlie 🎓 Originally from the Philippines, he’s been on an Aussie adventure for three years, infusing a fresh perspective into his degree.
Starting with a bachelor of Materials Engineering in the Philippines, Nigel moved to Australia and stayed in Geelong first, then shifted gears during lockdown, captivated by the perpetual demand and practicality of mining engineering. Moving from Geelong to Kalgoorlie presented a climate shift, but Nigel embraces the charm of the smaller city. He appreciates the friendliness of the people and the convenience of having everything within a five-minute walk. Although adjusting to the limited amenities took time, Nigel now sees it as an opportunity to simplify his life. His journey led him to Curtin, where hands-on learning became his passion.
Nigel thrives on the practicality of mining engineering classes, cherishing Work Integrated Learning (WIL) weeks. Industry events, mine tours, and supportive tutors, guild, and social clubs enrich his university experience.
Navigating networking challenges, Nigel values Curtin’s opportunities for academic and social connections. Moving from Geelong to Kalgoorlie brought climate adjustments, but he loves the charm of the smaller city and the simplicity of a five-minute walk to everything.
Sharing advice for future students, Nigel encourages openness to new experiences. Reflecting on his initial hesitations, he urges newcomers to embrace change and get involved in extracurricular activities without compromising academic performance. Nigel highlights the value of building a network and connections within the community.
